Synopsis of Story:
It had been about a year now since the pair of heroes moved to Mobotropolis, and times were incredibly great. Tails had finished his greatest creation to date, the Tornado, a blue and yellow airplane that could transform into a sleek, powerful fighter jet when needed. This made citywide patrol a lot easier and it allowed Sonic to address the public while keeping a safe distance from the crazier fans. He always saw Amy around when flying, always said hello when he could, but his popularity often kept them from truly hanging out at all since there would always be at least four crazy fans ready to throw themselves at him. The popularity was nice, but it could be way too much sometimes.

One night during a last patrol around the city, Sonic and Tails noticed a group of dots collecting at the tower of Coolette Corp, a large multi-million dollar technology provider and conglomerate. They sped towards them and realized that the specks were actually robots: red, white, and black drones that had blasted into the building and stolen a sort of gyro-shaped generator. Bulky, round bots were carrying the piece of equipment, while these sleek, gun-wielding drones guarded and watched for any disturbances. Sonic and  Tails flew closer but were attacked by the security drones, and had to retreat, because if they had hit one of the round bots holding up the generator, it could fall and crash into the crowd of people and cars below. The robots then loaded it into a large ship, and jetted away before Tails could try and pursue them. They noticed several police units down at the street below, and flew down. There they came across some familiar faces.

The Chaotix Detective Agency along with the Mobotropolis Police Force were investigating a series of robberies and thefts of different pieces of technology, from intricate circuitry and software, to massive power batteries and gyro generators. Vector, the leader of the troupe, was an ex-bouncer and a former head of security for another building the same company owned, so he knew the security systems and how hard they were to bypass. Espio, a former student of the practice of Ninjutsu, was the prime investigator of the crime scene, going over every detail and storing it in his photographic memory. He digresses that the bulkier robots were built with an extremely advanced alarm and security system hacking software, and that they had shut down the laser barrier that was encased in between the concrete walls of the building. They then blasted it open and stole the generator. Sonic notices a member missing, the Armadillo from before. Espio says that his name was Mighty, and that the Armadillo quit the agency for his own reasons. They're newest member, a kid bee named Charmy, comes and reports that he finished taking witness statements and reviewed the security camera footage, but most of it was static. He hands Vector a copy and then leaves to seek more evidence. Vector remarks while the kid is a bit too energetic and young, he was great at the collection of evidence and getting little tasks done.

Sonic asks if there is anything he and Tails could do to help, but the Chaotix says there isn't much, unless they can tell them where the ships are going and landing in. Tails suddenly thinks of an idea and proposes it: that someone stealthy could wear a long range tracking device and sneak onto the ship, and the team could follow the tracker and it would locate the zone the ships are landing in. Vector criticizes himself for not thing of such a plan, and Espio volunteers to be the infiltrator, revealing that he has the ability to change the color of his skin to mimic his surroundings, easily becoming invisible. They set up look outs all over Mobotropolis, eventually targeting the ship at an experimental facility on the outskirts of the city. Tails outfits Espio with a tracking chip and the chameleon sneaks onto the ship. Sonic and Tails make sure the robots take the bait by attacking them to see like retaliation, which causes the bots to move faster.

Espio rode the airship to a forest, separate from the much larger one Sonic temporarily resided in. Mobotropolis was sandwiched in between two of them, one about the same size as the city, and the other a small patch, not even half the size of the other. The larger one was named the KnotholeForest, while the other was named the Acornus. The ship flew deep into the Acornus, far from anyone's sight outside the tree line. Espio waited for all the bots to leave the plane before following them, to which he came across a dome-like base, with a strange symbol that looked like a moustache-bearing man with glasses painted on the side. The chameleon took the chip off and planted it on a tree next to the base, and awaited the rest of his team to appear. Soon enough they arrived by plane and speedboat, and they quickly infiltrated the base by the ventilation system, which had laser systems in it. Tails easily bypassed the security measures in the vents given they were of less quality as say the front door security.

They broke into the main chamber and witnessed a marvel of robotic and mechanical engineering. Inside the dome lay a massive warship, with thin worker bots building and enhancing it right at the moment. Scattered around it were assembly lines of robots building other robots, intricate mechanical arms piecing together new soldiers in this cybernetic army. Sonic couldn't help but feel an eerily familiarity with the technology around him, but he was snapped back to reality when security robots caught sight of the group. A chaotic battle ensued, causing destruction to the assembly lines, the warship, the computers; everything within the room was reduced to pieces of metal and glass. But even with their strong efforts, the team was surrounded by assault bots and forced to halt their attack. Sonic called out whoever was behind all the thievery and chaos to show themselves, to which a voice played on an intercom. It was brooding, deep, and seemingly familiar to the blue hedgehog. But similarity of voice tones was the last thing on his mind at the moment.

The voice acknowledged the blue hedgehog and his troupe, congratulating them on their investigation and ability to locate the base. But regardless their efforts were futile for they are too late and that the speaker has everything he needs to execute his master plan. Sonic demands he show himself, to which the voice tells him to turn his attention of the balcony perched at the top-center of the wall before them. The black sliding automatic doors split open and out stepped a lone man. A brooding, auburn moustache sprung from under his nose, reflective blue transition glasses shut over his eyes like window blinds, and he was clad in a long, red jacket with orange sleeves, white straps with golden buckles, and pair of sleek black pants-to-boots piece of attire with white plated zippers. His body was egg-shaped and seemingly disproportioned with his legs being skinny.

The man introduced himself as the distinguished, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, before asking the team to address themselves in return. Sonic only introduced himself, and said that was all the man needed to know. Under his breath the doctor said "Is that what you're calling yourself nowadays?" The group demanded the doctor tell them why he was constructing the airship and what the cause was for the robots. The Doctor simply replied, "Why to take over the world, of course. Why else would one need a massive airship and a robot army?" Sonic smirks and points out that the whole base is trashed, with giant holes in the airship and pieces of scattered robots littering the floor. The man chuckled at Sonic's taunt, before pulling out a remote and activating a television screen near them.

On the screen, an armada of red, black, and white drones, zeppelins, and bombers were ominously nearing the city of Mobotropolis. As they gasp at the sight, Robotnik reveals that the base they are standing in was merely an assembly center, one of nearly two dozen, and mocks them by saying that "if they hurry they may just have a crumb of a chance." Sonic growls at the doctor, but then the whole base begins to quake. Before they knew it the roof of the building was blown to bits, with Tails circling in the skies with the transformed Tornado. Robotnik quickly retreated back behind the sliding doors, before blasting out in his own sort of aircraft, heading towards the fleet.
Sonic leapt on to the Tornado and told the Chaotix to head back to the city and start evacuating everyone to the Knothole Forest. He and Tails then give chase to Robotnik but are forced to retreat when they get too close to the massive offensive. They return to the city and begin evacuating the citizens while the Mobotropolis Police Force begins to mount up a defensive position. But soon enough, the airships come and rain firebombs down onto the city, and the public falls into chaos.

Sonic leads the Police to the forest bridge where they hold their ground so that the public can manage to escape into the wood. While finishing the last of a plethora of robots who have taken a large number of Mobotropolans prisoner, Sonic hears a scream from a nearby apartment tower. He recognizes it as Amy's and sprints towards the building, much to Tails' confusion. Reaching the top level he breaks down the door with a spin dash and finds her fighting off three drones while wounded from a grazing shot to the ribs. He attacks the three bots, easily dispatching them, and picks her up, leaping out a massive hole blown in the wall as an incoming firebomb blasts toward them. She screams on the way down as the building explodes into a massive inferno, but he lands on his feet near-gracefully. He then runs her down to the bridge, where an officer takes her to the other side post-haste. Sonic then began to look at the skies, hoping his fox friend was still airborne and wasn't shot down.

The skies were barren of any aerial movement, minus the robotic army.
Part 1 of the next chapter in Sonic's Story. Robotnik takes over Mobotropolis effortlessly, forcing many of the city's denizens to flee into the Knothole Forest. It is there new colleagues and old friends will cultivate and form the original resistance the Doctor, The Freedom Fighters.
